The American Board of Professional Psychology conducts voluntary examinations of psychologists wishing to obtain board certification.  As noted on their website, "Board Certification through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) provides peer and public recognition of demonstrated competence in its affiliated specialty areas." Obtaining board certification requires steps above and beyond those required to become licensed as a psychologist.
